Product Description
Product Description
Acustop Acoustic MDF Slimline Overlay Board is a low-profile acoustic floor overlay from the Tekfon Acustop range, made up of a 100% twice recycled 10mm PET resilient mat bonded to a 9mm moisture resistant MDF facing. It is laid as a floating floor over an existing timber or concrete subfloor to reduce impact and structure-borne noise passing between storeys. It is an overlay rather than a structural deck, so it is installed fully supported over a subfloor that already carries the load, and it is designed to work alongside a recognised acoustic ceiling treatment below.
The whole build-up adds 19mm to the finished floor level, and for most buyers that is the deciding figure. Deeper platform decks add 28mm, 32mm or more, which means easing door bottoms, reworking stair nosings and rethinking every threshold on the job. At 19mm those problems largely disappear, which is why Slimfloor 19 turns up repeatedly in flat conversions, HMO upgrades, refurbishments and occupied properties where the floor level simply cannot move.
Each board measures 1200mm x 600mm, covers 0.72m² and is supplied individually rather than by the pack, with tongue and groove machining to all four edges. Of the 19mm total, a full 10mm is resilient PET mat, so the majority of the build-up is doing acoustic work rather than making up thickness. Under laboratory test to BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021 and rated to BS EN ISO 717-2:2020, the board returned a weighted reduction of impact sound pressure level of ΔLw = 21 dB, with spectrum adaptation terms of CI,Δ −10 dB and CI,r −1 dB. Testing was carried out at the University of Salford.
That figure is worth reading carefully, because acoustic flooring is a category where published numbers are often quoted without saying what was measured. The ΔLw value above is the improvement the board itself delivers when applied over an existing floor structure that already provides some impact reduction of its own. It is a product-level laboratory result, arrived at by an engineering method giving indicative figures. It is not a whole-floor result, and it does not on its own demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E: Part E performance standards are whole-construction requirements verified by pre-completion testing or Robust Details, and no single board satisfies them alone.
Reaching those standards depends on the complete Tekfon system being used, and the ceiling below matters as much as the floor above. The specified treatment is two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard fitted to resilient bars at 400mm centres, plus a 100mm 60kg/m³ slab fitted between the joists or into the ceiling void, with all edges sealed using acoustic sealant. Laying the boards without that ceiling treatment will not deliver the tested result.
The performance comes from separation rather than mass. The PET mat sits between subfloor and MDF facing as a resilient layer, absorbing footfall energy and vibration before it can pass into the structure below. Because the mechanism is decoupling, the perimeter detail matters as much as the board: any hard contact between the floating deck and the surrounding walls or skirtings gives sound a route straight around the isolation, which is why the Tekfon acoustic foam perimeter strip is a required component rather than an optional extra.
Boards are laid in a half bond pattern, starting as far from the doorway as possible, with tongues cut from any board abutting a wall. Tongue and groove joints are tightly butted and glued using the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive, with pipe and service penetrations sealed using Tekfon Acoustic and Intumescent Mastic. Mechanical fixings are not used except where two cut edges meet at a doorway. The finished deck takes carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl directly, giving a hard-wearing surface ready for the floor covering without further overboarding.
Key Benefits of Acustop Acoustic MDF Slimline Overlay Board:
- Adds only 19mm to the finished floor level, keeping door heights, stair rises and threshold details intact.
- A full 10mm of the 19mm build-up is resilient PET mat, so most of the depth is working acoustically.
- Laboratory tested reduction of impact sound pressure level of ΔLw = 21 dB to BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021, rated to BS EN ISO 717-2:2020 and tested at the University of Salford.
- Resilient mat made from 100% twice recycled PET, using seven recycled bottles per board.
- 9mm moisture resistant MDF facing giving a hard-wearing deck ready for finishes.
- Tongue and groove machined on all four edges for tight, glued joints across the whole floor.
- Works as an overlay over concrete, screed and existing timber subfloors.
- 1200mm x 600mm board covering 0.72m², sized for carrying up stairs and working in occupied rooms.
- PET mat is considered hypoallergenic and the board is extremely low in VOCs.
- Takes carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl floor finishes.
- Part of the full Tekfon Acustop system, with matching perimeter strip, adhesive and acoustic mastic available.
19mm Acustop Slimfloor good to know:
- This is an overlay, not a structural deck. It must be laid fully supported over an existing timber or concrete subfloor. It is the customer's responsibility to confirm the subfloor can provide the support required, and noggins or additional support must be fitted where needed.
- The tested performance applies to the complete Tekfon system. All specified components must be used, and the acoustic ceiling treatment below the subfloor is integral to how the floor performs.
- The ΔLw 21 dB figure is a product-level result, not a whole-floor one. It does not on its own demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E, which is verified by pre-completion testing or Robust Details.
- The acoustic perimeter strip is a required component. Without it the floating deck bridges to the walls and skirtings and the isolation is lost.
- Boards measure 1200mm x 600mm and are sold individually, each covering 0.72m².
- Tongue and groove joints are glued with the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive. Mechanical fixings are not used except where two cut edges meet at a doorway.
- Leave the floor untrafficked for at least 24 hours after laying, before skirtings and floor finishes go down.
- Tekfon list carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl as suitable finishes. Tiled and heavy rigid finishes are not listed, so confirm with Tekfon Technical before specifying one.
- In bathrooms and kitchens, units are mounted on a separate plywood or OSB platform on isolating pads rather than fixed straight through the board.
- New partitions are built directly off the subfloor and isolated from the panels using the acoustic foam perimeter strip.
- Pipe and service penetrations pass through an oversized hole sealed with Tekfon Acoustic and Intumescent Mastic.
- The MDF facing is moisture resistant but not waterproof: store boards flat, off the ground and dry before installation.
Where the noise is footfall and the constraint is height, Slimfloor 19 answers both at once: a deep resilient layer inside a slim overall build-up, with a published laboratory result behind it rather than a number borrowed from a regulation.
