200mm Loft Insulation

200mm is the recommended depth for loft floor insulation under current UK building regulations, and the standard specification for both new builds and retrofit top-up projects. A 200mm layer of mineral wool on a standard loft floor achieves a U-value of approximately 0.16 W/m²K, meeting Part L requirements and the Energy Saving Trust guidance for existing homes. Mineral Wool Loft Insulation Rolls at 200mm

Mineral wool is the most practical choice for loft insulation at 200mm and is the material used in most UK loft top-up projects. It's non-combustible, moisture-resistant and straightforward to fit, particularly when laid as a second layer across joists.

Knauf Loft Roll 44 Combi-Cut and Superglass Multiroll 44 at 200mm are the most commonly specified glass mineral wool options for this application. Both use a combi-cut format that allows the roll to be split for fitting between joists or used full-width when laying across them. Rockwool stone wool rolls and slabs are the higher-density alternative for projects where fire resistance or acoustic performance is also a requirement.

PIR Loft Insulation Boards at 200mm

Rigid PIR boards at 200mm are primarily used in loft conversion projects where insulating between and over rafters is required and thermal targets are demanding. At this thickness, PIR boards from Recticel and Celotex achieve U-values well below 0.16 W/m²K, making them the right specification where rafter depth allows and performance requirements are high.

For standard loft space, mineral wool rolls are generally the more practical and cost-effective choice. PIR boards at 200mm are most appropriate for conversion work or where there needs to be a continuous insulation layer above the structure.

200mm Sustainable Loft Insulation

Thermafleece CosyWool at 200mm meets current building regulations targets using sheep's wool, a natural and renewable material. Sheep's wool actively regulates moisture rather than simply resisting it, which matters in older properties where breathability is important and where trapping humidity in the structure can cause long-term problems.

Thermafleece SupaSoft, made from recycled polyester, offers a similar environmental profile to sheep's wool with comparable thermal performance at 200mm. Both are worth specifying if sustainability is important.

Choosing the Right 200mm Loft Insulation

For a loft top-up on an existing home, mineral wool rolls at 200mm laid over existing insulation is the standard approach. Knauf, Superglass and Rockwool all offer suitable products for this application.

For lofts in new build homes, the same products apply but check the specification for the required U-value.

For a loft conversion, 200mm PIR boards between and over rafters will deliver the thermal performance required without excessive build-up depth.

For older or period properties, Thermafleece CosyWool manages moisture without trapping it, making it a better long-term choice than conventional insulation in solid wall or traditional construction.
